Yellow leaves and leggy stems are the two problems that show up in almost every apartment herb inbox. They look like “disease.” They are usually physics: not enough photons, or roots sitting wet.

Leggy seedlings (tall, pale, floppy)
Cause: light is too weak or too far.
Fix:
- Lower the LED to brand guidance (often a few inches above the canopy).
- Run lights ~14–16 hours with a cheap timer.
- If you are on a sill alone, add a clip-on LED — daylight through glass is weaker than product photos.
Yellow leaves
| Pattern | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Lower leaves yellow first | Normal aging or low nitrogen | Harvest them; light feed if growth stalled |
| Whole plant yellow + wet soil | Overwatering / poor drainage | Dry down; check saucer isn’t a swamp |
| Yellow + stretch | Light starvation | Stronger / closer light first |
| Yellow tips in hydro | pH / nutrient burn | Dilute nutrients; top up with plain water once |
Algae or fuzz on reservoirs
Block light to the water, wipe the tank, and do not overfill. A dirty reservoir is not a reason to replace the whole kit.
Key takeaway Diagnose light and water before you spend. Most “dead basil” pages should have started with a clip light and a tray.
